Abergavenny Eisteddfod Y Fenni - 20 June 2009
Welcome to Abergavenny Eisteddfod Y Fenni, the annual arts event for young people and adults with competitions for everyone, regardless of language. This year's Abergavenny Eisteddfod, to be held on 20th June 2009, will be the eighth since its relaunch after a gap of sixty five years. Please see Event Details above for information on how to enter.
Primary and secondary
As usual, for primary school
pupils and secondary school students, there will be instrumental, singing,
dance and drama competitions on stage at a local school. These competitions draw impressively large
numbers of talented young people from the area and correspondingly appreciative
audiences.
Our experienced adjudicators
offer useful advice and select winners, all of whom receive medals. All the secondary school competitions carry
cash prizes, as do some of the junior ones, and the competitors in the four
best secondary school acts are invited to perform again in the Borough Theatre
at the beginning of the Adult Eisteddfod.
Three New Competitions
This year, following a suggestion from a secondary school
student, we are planning two new stage competitions. Firstly, there is sight-reading, for which competitors will be invited to read a passage
aloud from a suitable book that they are unlikely to have seen before. Winners will be those who are judged to have
read most fluently and with the most appropriate expression. Secondly, at the request of local groups we are introducing a choir competition.
In addition to the stage events there will be the usual art and literature competitions, sponsored by Abergavenny Town Council. The titles/themes of these are already available (click here) and this year, again thanks to the suggestion of a secondary school student, we are going to run a photography competition, for both primary pupils and secondary students.
Adults
New for adults this year is a choir competition for ensembles of between ten and thirty members singing in a style of their own choice. This, along with all other final stage competitions for adults, will take place in the evening at the Borough Theatre in one of the most enjoyable and friendly events Abergavenny has to offer. The winners of our literature competitions are also announced on this occasion and some of the winning contributions read out.
We welcome suggestions for improvement, so please let us know your ideas. You may also want to contact us for further information or perhaps to join the Abergavenny Eisteddfod Committee , which consists entirely of voluntary helpers.
